Thinking about installing wooden decking in your garden, but don't know where to start? Perhaps you're looking to purchase a standard kit, in the hope that it's the easiest solution?
The reality is that fitting the bits of wood together is only half the job, so a ready made kit won't actually make things all that much easier, and besides, even the kits need some installation and fixing.
What about if your decking needs to fit around something, or allow access to a feature ...
Using a professional will mean that the wooden decking and structure can be made to fit around whatever obstructions or features that you may find in your garden.
Bespoke Decking in Warwickshire
When you look at the top picture, showing the finished decking, you'd be forgiven in thinking that it looks simple and straightforward ... 'couple of hours with a saw and screwdriver, and Robert's your father's brother'.
The reason why it looks so ... simple ... is because there's hours of planning, measuring, and thought gone in to the design; building a substructure that feels solid, allows for easy access to a covered manhole, that drains water, doesn't flex or bounce, and will last for many years to come.
And of course - everything needs to match at that one central point; it draws focus to the centre, and if it was even just 15mm out, you'd notice it. Measure twice, cut once.
Decking Structure
They key to any good garden decking installation is the sub-structure to which the decking boards are attached ... saving a few pennies on the timber size, or amount, is a saving in the wrong place, you'd be better off going for a cheaper after-treatment. (And with some treatments costing upwards of £75 or more, that's entirely possible).
The following photos depict a typical construction process:
You'll notice that some of the larger sections are also fitted with extra 45 degree braces - you don't want to feel the decking flex under your feet as you walk across it!
Don't Underestimate Your Hardware Needs
At a wild guess, how many screws do you think were used in this job?
100? 200? 250?
There are around 400 screws in this decking job, and it's relatively small (just over 3m square). Timber? 22 Lengths of decking, 11 joists. As it happens, with the design, being in a quadrant, it was difficult to minimise wastage, so I actually needed to purchase another 3 lengths of decking, which left me a few offcuts.
